Allopathic Medial Schools - Their RoleAllopathic training is one of the most recognized and widely available forms of medical training. Allopathic training is provided by various allopathic medical schools in the United States. One, who completes a postgraduate training program in allopathic medicine, is awarded an MD degree in allopathic medicine. Most allopathic medical schools in United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico are accredited by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Accredited means licensed. However, the educational methodologies adopted in these schools may differ from one another. In allopathic medical schools, medical education is based on various educational models. In the traditional model, students acquire basic knowledge in medical science in addition to clinical rotation. The traditional model consists of two programs, namely the system-based program and the case-based program. In the system-based program, students are made to learn concepts related to physiological systems of the human body that includes kidneys, lungs, and stomach. On the other hand, in the case-based program, clinical vignettes are used to teach students. Some allopathic medical schools use a hybrid approach that uses both these programs to teach their students. Allopathic medical schools constantly make efforts to find better ways to impart knowledge to their students. These schools have made a coordinated effort to make their students get along with patients right at the start of their education i9n the allopathic medical school. This helps students to gain more practical knowledge and learn about more medical cases, even before they complete two years at medical school. Allopathic medical schools also provide clinical rotations to its students. Clinical rotation means though a student is keen to do a specialization in plastic surgery, he will have to undergo clinical rotation in some other specialized field, say pediatrics. Thus, the effort is to make students jacks of all trades in medical sciences. Allopathic medical schools give a student a number of options to practice in various fields of medical specializations through the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in medicine. The MD degree is a universally recognized degree in medical sciences and if one wishes to practice medicine overseas, he will find that the MD degree has a preference over the Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree. Allopathic medical education is the most widely accepted form of medical education in the world. Thus a nation's duty towards allopathic medical education is much more than towards any other form of medical education. This is what the AAMC is doing for the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. With its accreditation program, it has made an effort to improve upon the quality of education delivered in various allopathic medical schools of these three nations. Thus, we conclude that allopathic medical schools and their medical education programs are doing a yeoman's service in these nations to train and develop doctors in the field of allopathic medicine. |
